Woody Joe 1/72 Scale Hishigaki Kaisen Wooden Model Assembly Kit
Naturally, maritime transportation developed in Japan, a country surrounded by the sea on all sides and with a network of rivers.
Their structure is completely different from Western ships, with a unique shape constructed from side and floor boards that are nearly the full length of the hull. Collectively, they are called "wasen."
During the Edo period, Japan's representative large cargo sailing ships were colloquially called "senkoku-bune" (rice senkoku is equivalent to 150 tons in modern times).
Among the senkoku-bune were the hishigaki-kaisen and the taru-kaisen, each controlled by its own shipping wholesaler.
The hishigaki of a hishigaki-kaisen ship features diamond-shaped latticework on the fences on both sides of the hull, and was a trademark of the shipping wholesaler.
Most parts are meticulously laser-machined, allowing for precise assembly of the complex structure.
The plain wood construction without special paint, a characteristic of wasen, further enhances the hishigaki-kaisen's appeal.
